Driving Licence in Delhi
Not everyone in India needs a Driving License because as the name suggests, it is mandatory to have this particular document, only for those who owns a vehicle whether four wheeler or two wheeler and drive or ride on them. This is probably the only document ever needed if you have a vehicle that acts as the proof that the vehicle is your own and that it is not otherwise. It is thereby given by the Government of India that no person shall drive any kind of motor vehicle without the possession of the effective (not lapsed or old or someone elseís) driving license which has been issued to him that specifically mentions that the vehicle is authorized for him to drive, in all public places. Therefore in order to freely move about the city roads day and night, one must have a driving license with him or her. Not having this document with you and still driving a motor vehicle can lead to heavy fine and punishment as per the Indian government rules and laws.
There are two types of license one can obtain. They are Learner's license and Permanent license, the former being temporary which is valid up to a period of 6 months. When the Learnerís license is issued one needs to apply for a permanent license after one month of the issuance of the Learnerís license. People who are actually eligible to obtain a permanent driving license must have few things in order and they are:
- A valid Learnerís License
- One must apply after 30 days of the issuance of Learnerís license but within 180 days.
- One must have the basic knowledge about the vehicle systems, driving, traffic rules and regulations.
In order to request for a new driving license one must approach the zonal office that falls in their own locality which is called the Licensing Authority zonal offices. When you decide to go there, there are few documents which you must take along with you which are:
- Original and valid Learnerís License.
- Form number 4 duly filled and signed.
- Rs 75 for lamination and photograph charges.
- Age and Address proof (attested photocopies).
- Recent passport size photograph.
- The vehicles for which category you are applying the license.
- Sometimes in case of commercial license Form number 5 is required too.
In Delhi having original and photocopies of all the above documents is safer since sometimes just because of document or one simple thing the entire process would have to be redone again or it might just delay the process of getting a proper driving license. Once the officers in the Licensing Authority office in Delhi scrutinizes the documents as submitted by you and they give the green signal a driving test is what you would have to go through. For this you would have to bring in your vehicle to the zonal driving test area. The officers in charge would examine your driving ability, your familiarity with the vehicle, traffic rules and traffic signals. Sometimes the examiner would also ask you about the safety while in the vehicle. If you clear all these tests then you are set to go. They would provide you with your brand new driving license in about a week or 10 days time.
